Abuja - Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he planned to have cars running on gas during his tenure in the presidential seat.
According to a Naij report, Obasanjo made the disclosure on Monday while stating that he had plans for the development of natural gas for vehicles to utilize, thereby reducing the country's dependence on imported petrol.
While claiming that he had issued licences to three companies, namely Nipco Plc, Contact Global and Global Steel, Obasanjo stated that had his planned panned out as expected, 50 per cent of vehicles in the country would have been running on natural gas by now.
In addition, the elderly Statesman also revealed that Nipco has been investing significantly in his vision since then.
Reiterating Obasanjo's sentiments, his former special assistant on petroleum resources, Dr. Muhammed Ibrahim, revealed that a full concept had previously been initiated for the development of natural gas in the country.
"I was one of the team members when President Obasanjo was in office in 2006 that initiated the full concept of development of gas for vehicles and other applications in the country," Ibrahim stated.
Similarly, current President Muhammadu Buhari has also looked to gas as an alternative power source, with Today revealing that Government has commenced the process of cutting production costs to boost exploration.
"In Nigeria, as part of our strategies to reposition the oil industry, this administration has commenced the process of implementing carefully conceived initiatives, to reduce production costs and encourage efficiencies in oil exploration so as to achieve a 30 per cent increase in daily production levels (to about 2.8mbpd)," Vice President Yemi Osibanjo stated at the sixth African Petroleum Congress and Exhibition (CAPE VI).
